What Knot to Know?

How can we have different names for Knot Mole Branch just north of Knot Maul Branch Shelter? What is the history? One is correct but which? A 2009 White Blaze post seems to suggest that both should be "maul," but the mole was there first (long before the mall) , and there are none of those local settlers still around...
