A little PATH history - This is the first archived newsletter of PATH back in 1967 - two years after PATH was formed to maintain some of the AT in Southwest Virginia. Note we only had AT sections 10 & 11 at that time. Paul Clayton believes these are, ""PATH is hereby assigned Section 10 of the Southwest Virginia segment of the Appalachian Trail.  This is the section16.34 miles in length between Big Walker Lookout and Groseclose". In 1966, PATH took on an additional 11 miles from Groseclose to VA 16. At that time, the Mount Rogers NRA Headquarters had not been built. This section had been maintained by Reverend A.J. Shumate and the Boy Scouts of Grace Lutheran Church in Rural Retreat. Reverend Shumate was suffering health problems by the mid-1960s and was happy to find a home for the section that he had long tended.
